Bush the Belligerent

Bush says domestic spying program legal, to continue. U.S. President George W. Bush insisted on Monday he had not broken the law in authorising spying on Americans suspected of ties to terrorism and said he would continue to approve the program, despite concern it eroded civil liberties. Bush said he believed an investigation was under way by the Justice Department into who committed the “shameful act” of revealing the covert program to the press.

The shame is Bush’s, and America’s — turning liberty on its head by asserting presidential powers that move toward absolute power.

Congress is beginning to wake up, but only beginning, even as Bush packs the courts with people who’ll do it his way. Let’s hope it’s not too late.
